If your tryouts are over, and you’ve got some new faces on the team, this is just the blog post you’re looking for. How do you break the ice? In today’s podcast I’ll discuss some of my favorite ways to help people get to know each other.
I’m not talking about team bonding yet, that will come later. For team bonding to work, you all need to be comfortable with each other. So how can you jump right in and get to know your teammates?
1. Never ask the same person to be your partner.
That might be weird at first, but you can do it. Go ask someone you don’t know to be your partner. Then change partners all the time, so you're always finding someone new.
2. Question of the Day
Instead of counting out-loud during stretches, ask a question of the day, and give everyone a chance to answer. This could feel weird too, but don’t allow that to stop you. Give it a chance, talk about your answers, you’ll realize a natural conversation will follow.
3. Group Texts
Start a group text under the guise of setting up a way to communicate information. As annoying as these can be, they are annoying in a bonding, get to know you kind of way. Everyone can enjoy that they just keep coming. Not to mention, you’re going to get to know the people within them.
4. Get to the Gym Early.
Show up early and start a game of short court, or something similar with the people who are there. Don’t be shy if you don’t know them as well. Well, those are my favorite ways to break the ice.
